When you hear the phrase “from the ground up,” think of Emmanuel Ashaolu, the creative mind and skilled hands behind Aphia Himhanuel, a fast-rising footwear brand based in the UK. Emmanuel isn’t just a shoe designer — he’s a geologist by training, a born craftsman, and a proud Nigerian entrepreneur who turned his lifelong passion into a globally recognised talent.
Shoes Before School
For Emmanuel, the journey began in Nigeria long before university life. He had always loved shoes — wearing them, collecting them, and later, selling them. At first, he was simply a middleman, connecting customers with makers. But after receiving countless compliments like “Where did you get your shoes?”, he realised he could do more. That’s when the spark ignited — and he began learning to make shoes himself.
“It started from curiosity and pride,” he recalls. “I loved quality, and I wanted to create what I would proudly wear.”
A Leap of Faith to the UK
In 2022, Emmanuel moved to the UK as a dependent — but his ambition didn’t stop at migration. He was introduced to the Global Talent Visa by his wife and, after researching the requirements, realised he had a solid 65% of what was needed. Confident in his craft and with a growing portfolio, he took a chance and applied.
It worked.
Today, @aphia_himhanuel is not just a brand — it’s a statement. One that proudly represents Nigerian creativity, black excellence, and the power of belief. His work gained further recognition when he showcased his collection at Yorkshire Fashion Week 2024, a proud moment for both him and the Nigerian community in the UK.
International Footprints
Now operating an international store, @aphia.uk, and managing orders from www.aphiahimhanuel.com, Emmanuel’s story is inspiring a new wave of Nigerian creatives in the UK. His shoes are bold, timeless, and unapologetically African — blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design.
The Power of Belief and Paperwork
While the designs speak for themselves, Emmanuel is just as passionate about helping others navigate their own paths. “I’m grateful for the platform and the Global Talent route,” he says. “But I also want to demystify the process for others — the steps, the documents, the mental roadblocks — I’ve been through it, and I want others to know it’s possible.”
A Message for Nigerians in the UK
For Nigerians in the UK dreaming of building something bigger than themselves, Emmanuel’s story is a powerful reminder that exceptional talent isn’t always born in a boardroom — sometimes, it’s handcrafted in the streets of Ilorin.
So whether you’re a designer, developer, artist, or entrepreneur, let Aphia’s journey be a sign: your roots are not your limits — they are your launchpad.
