The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has introduced a new contactless passport renewal system for Nigerians living abroad. This means that if youโre in the UK or Ireland, you can now renew your Nigerian passport entirely onlineโno more long queues or stressful visits to the embassy! ๐
Hereโs what you need to know:
๐ 1. What Is the Contactless Passport Renewal System?
The NIS has launched this new system to simplify passport renewal for Nigerians in the UK and Ireland. Instead of going to a passport office, you can now complete the process from your phone or computer.
This follows the successful rollout of the same system in Canada last year.
๐ 2. Why Is This a Big Deal?
The Nigerian government says this system will:
โ
Reduce stress & waiting times โ No need to travel for biometrics!
โ
Make passport renewal easier โ Apply from the comfort of your home.
โ
Improve efficiency โ Faster processing and delivery.
โ
Support digital transformation โ Part of Nigeriaโs move towards a tech-driven economy.
๐ 3. How to Apply for a Contactless Passport Renewal
If youโre eligible, hereโs how to apply:
๐น Download the NIS Mobile App (available on Google Play Store) OR visit the NIS website when the service launches in your region.
๐น Create a profile with your valid email.
๐น Check your eligibility to ensure your passport qualifies for renewal.
๐น Provide your details โ National Identification Number (NIN) and passport number.
๐น Upload required documents โ NIN, birth certificate, local government certificate, etc.
๐น Capture your biometrics โ Use your mobile phone for fingerprint scans.
๐น Make payment online and submit your application.
๐ฆ Your renewed passport will be delivered to your registered address.
๐ 4. Who Can Use This Service?
Not everyone is eligible for the contactless system. To qualify, you must:
โ๏ธ Already have a Nigerian passport (this is for renewals only, not first-time applicants).
โ๏ธ Have a valid National Identification Number (NIN).
โ๏ธ Ensure your current passport is not damaged or expired for too long.
If your passport has expired for a long time or is damaged, you may still need to visit an immigration office.
๐ 5. When Is This Happening?
๐
Launch Date in the UK & Ireland: February 7, 2025
๐ Other European countries will follow soon after.
The Nigerian Immigration Service has assured that this initiative is part of its commitment to making life easier for Nigerians abroad.
Final Thoughts ๐ญ
This is great news for Nigerians in the UK who have struggled with long waits and complex procedures for passport renewal. With this new system, renewing your passport will be faster, easier, and 100% online.

My Nigerian passport is expired for over 2yrs now, And I’m also 65yrs. Could you please advise if I can renew my passport on the newly introduced system ie contractles. Just in case, the new contractles is not available to me and some other people, could l still travel on my expired passport and renew in lagos on my arrival.
Youโll need a valid Nigerian passport to travel, as airlines and immigration authorities typically wonโt accept an expired passport. The new contactless passport system is currently rolling out, but its availability for renewals, especially for expired passports over two years, depends on the Nigerian Immigration Serviceโs guidelines.
Your best option is to renew your passport at the nearest Nigerian High Commission before traveling. However, if you prefer to renew in Lagos, you may need an Emergency Travel Certificate (ETC) to board your flight. We recommend checking with the Nigerian High Commission in the UK for the latest updates on the contactless system and your renewal options.
Let us know if you need further guidance! ๐ณ๐ฌโ๏ธ
