Parents are being urged to think carefully before sharing back-to-school photos of their children on social media. While posting a first-day-of-school picture can be a fun way to celebrate a child’s return to school and share the moment with family and friends, these seemingly innocent images may sometimes reveal more personal information than parents realise.
A single photograph can contain details that could identify a child’s school, location or daily routine. School names and logos, uniforms, classroom signs, school entrances, street names, house numbers and recognisable landmarks may all provide useful clues about where a child spends their time. Even captions, location tags, timestamps or references to a child’s class and schedule can unintentionally reveal sensitive information.
Parents are therefore encouraged to carefully review photographs before posting them online. They should consider what can be seen in the background, remove location information where possible and check their social media privacy settings. It is also advisable to avoid publicly sharing a child’s full name, exact school, regular travel route, daily schedule or other information that could make them easily identifiable.
This does not mean parents should stop celebrating important milestones or sharing special family moments. Instead, taking a few extra seconds to check what a photograph reveals can make a significant difference to a child’s privacy and online safety.
By being more cautious about what is shared publicly, parents can continue to celebrate the excitement of a new school year while helping to keep their children’s personal information safe from people who may misuse it.
