A Yoruba Cultural Drama Experience in Doncaster, UK
On 4th April 2026, Africans in the UK community and lovers of culture gathered at CAST, Waterdale, Doncaster (DN1 3BU) for a powerful cultural showcase titled ÒÒDAYÈ (The Cradle) — a deeply rooted Yoruba narrative drama that retells the history, spirituality, philosophy, and traditions of the Yoruba people of South Western Nigeria in its original essence.
Presented as a rich theatrical experience, ÒÒDAYÈ took the audience on an evocative journey into the philosophical, spiritual, and historical foundations of Yoruba culture. The production unfolded as both memory and revelation — an intergenerational dialogue between ancestors and descendants, where the past was brought vividly into the present as a living force of identity and guidance.
A Symbolic Return to the Cradle of Identity

Set within a symbolic “cradle,” the production explored themes of origin, continuity, and cultural identity. This cradle represented not just birth, but the womb of civilization — the sacred space where values are formed, nurtured, and passed down.
Through chants, drum language, dance, poetic dialogue, and folk songs, the audience was immersed in the sacred narratives of creation associated with Odùduwà and the spiritual depth of the Òrìṣà tradition, with strong cultural references to Ilé-Ifẹ̀, the ancient cradle of Yoruba civilization.
Tradition Meets Modern Influence
As the story progressed, generational tensions emerged between tradition and modern influences. The production highlighted how cultural identity remains essential in a fast-changing world, reminding audiences that without culture and spiritual roots, identity becomes fragile — like a tree without roots.
Core Yoruba values such as ìwà (character), omolúàbí ethics, communal responsibility, respect for elders, truth, hard work, courage, trade, and moral accountability formed the ethical backbone of the narrative. These values were not only told but powerfully demonstrated through performance.
The play reinforced a central message: wealth without integrity is empty, and progress without memory is directionless.
A Living Cultural Inheritance
With evocative bàtá drumming, ritual movement, and dynamic storytelling, ÒÒDAYÈ celebrated Yoruba heritage as a living inheritance, not a relic of the past. It affirmed that the cradle is more than a place of birth — it is a sacred foundation of moral formation, culture, and identity.
ÒÒDAYÈ ultimately stood as a celebration of culture, heritage, and continuity — a reminder that Yoruba tradition still breathes, speaks, and lives within the diaspora.

“ÒÒDAYÈ — where culture lives and tradition breathes.”

This is an awesome performance. Ajidans Studios has created a shared space where talent meets. Creativity speaks and culture is preserved in movements, demonstrations and rendition. ÒÒDAYE. A reminder of identity. A call to embrace modernity and advancement. Culture is transformational, tradition is representation of old, the present and future onwards.
When you have a sense of your own cultural identity, then you know the basis of where you’re going in Life.
