With the recent icy and cold weather across the UK, NHS hospitals are seeing a rise in injuries caused by slips and falls 🧊. These accidents can happen quickly—on pavements, driveways, bus stops, or even at home—so it’s important to know what to do if you or someone else falls.
If Someone Falls: Stay Calm and Assess the Situation
If a fall happens, the first step is to stay calm. Help the person remain still and gently check if they are in pain or have any visible injuries. Ask them how they feel and do not rush them to stand up.
Only attempt to get up if:
- There is no severe pain
- They feel steady
- There are no signs of serious injury
If standing causes pain, dizziness, or discomfort, it’s safer to stay put and get medical advice.
When to Contact NHS 111
According to NHS guidance, you should call NHS 111 or use the NHS 111 online service if:
- There is ongoing pain after a fall
- You suspect a minor injury (such as a sprain or strain)
- You are unsure whether further medical care is needed
NHS 111 can assess symptoms and advise whether you need to see a GP, visit urgent care, or manage the injury at home.
When to Call 999 Immediately
You should call 999 straight away if someone:
- Has fallen and hit their head
- Has neck, back, or hip pain
- Cannot get up after the fall
- Is confused, very drowsy, or unconscious
These could be signs of a serious injury, and emergency care is needed urgently.
Stay Safe This Winter
For Nigerians living in the UK—especially elders, parents with children, and those working early or late hours—extra caution is needed during icy conditions. Wear shoes with good grip, take your time when walking, and support older relatives where possible.
Knowing the right steps can prevent further harm and help NHS services support you faster.
Stay safe and look out for one another.
