Why food safety matters
For many Nigerians in the UK, food is more than just nutrition — it’s culture, connection, and comfort. But poor food handling can turn a tasty meal into a health hazard.
Every year, thousands fall ill from food poisoning caused by:
- Bacteria like E. coli, salmonella, Campylobacter
- Viruses, parasites, or even toxins from spoiled food
Let’s make sure jollof, egusi, pepper soup and co. bring joy — not hospital visits.
⚠️ Common Food Poisoning Symptoms
If you or a family member feel unwell after eating:
- Nausea or vomiting
- Stomach cramps
- Diarrhoea
- Fever
- Weakness
🩺 In serious cases (especially for kids, elders, or pregnant women), see a doctor ASAP — especially if symptoms last more than 24 hours or involve blood or high fever.
🧊 Prevention Tips (Especially for Nigerian Food Lovers)
🛒 Shop Smart
- Check expiry dates on meat, fish, dairy, and canned items
- Avoid bulging cans or broken seals
- Don’t buy meat or stew from sketchy sources – especially online!
🧼 Cook Clean
- Wash hands, cooking tools, and surfaces before and after cooking
- Use separate chopping boards for raw meat and veg
- Reheat leftovers properly – not just microwave warm!
🌡️ Temperature Check
- Store perishables in the fridge (below 5°C)
- Don’t leave soup or stew out overnight
- Use a food thermometer to make sure meat and fish are well cooked
🚫 Avoid Risky Foods
- Unpasteurised “fura” or soft cheese
- Raw eggs (in homemade mayo or suya sauce)
- Street food that’s not hot or freshly made
💧 Treatment Tips
If you suspect food poisoning:
- Hydrate constantly – water, oral rehydration, or even coconut water
- Avoid oily or spicy food for a few days
- If severe, get medical attention fast (NHS 111 or visit A&E)
