A heartbreaking tragedy has struck a Nigerian family in the UK, leaving a widowed father to raise his newborn son after his wife tragically passed away just minutes after giving birth.
Temitope Elizabeth Soneye Iwute, aged 32, passed away shortly after undergoing a C-section to deliver her baby, Ethan Iwute, on January 19, 2025, at Croydon University Hospital.
Temitope’s family shared that her final moments were filled with heartbreak, as she told her husband, Tony Iwute, 47, “I can’t breathe” before she passed away, despite the hospital staff’s best efforts.

Tony, a railway worker, is now left to care for baby Ethan alone. He expressed his deep sorrow, saying, “I am a broken man – I still don’t understand what has happened. It’s totally devastating.” The community has rallied around the family, offering support during this incredibly difficult time.
The couple, originally from Nigeria, had been together for seven years, with the past two years spent as a married couple. They were eagerly preparing to welcome their first child into the world.
Temitope had recently completed her master’s degree in digital marketing at York St John University and was looking forward to her graduation in March. Her family had planned to celebrate her achievements and the new life she was about to begin with her son.
Sadly, Temitope never had the chance to hold her child before her passing. After the C-section, she expressed difficulty breathing, prompting immediate efforts to resuscitate her. Despite these attempts, Temitope tragically went into cardiac arrest again and passed away before she could be transferred to a higher-level ICU.
Her death is a rare occurrence, as maternal deaths during childbirth are extremely uncommon in the UK, especially for women who receive regular antenatal care and have no pre-existing medical conditions, as was the case for Temitope.
The Iwute family is now facing the dual challenge of mourning their loss and providing a stable and loving environment for baby Ethan. Tony is currently unable to work and is being supported by the community. A fundraising campaign has been set up to help cover the costs of Temitope’s funeral and to support baby Ethan.
The family’s community has come together to ensure that Ethan will grow up surrounded by the love and care his mother had dreamed of providing. They are determined to honor her memory and ensure that her dreams of motherhood are carried forward.

In light of this devastating loss, it is a powerful reminder of how important it is to consider life insurance. No one can predict the future, and tragedies like this one underscore the importance of financial planning for the unexpected. Life insurance can help provide security for families during such uncertain times and ease the financial burdens that come with such an unimaginable loss.
In these difficult times, the Nigerian community in the UK continues to show incredible solidarity and support for families facing hardship, as evidenced by the outpouring of love and assistance to Tony and baby Ethan.
Our thoughts are with the Iwute family as they navigate this unimaginable loss. May they find strength in each other and in the support of their community.
