The UK government has intensified its crackdown on illegal immigration, with recent enforcement actions leading to severe consequences for employers who hire unauthorized workers. A car wash owner in Lincolnshire has been banned from operating any business for five years after being found guilty of employing illegal workers.
Mohamed Hamza, 34, of Granville Road, Peterborough, hired workers from Syria and Egypt at M&H Car Wash on Enterprise Way in Pinchbeck, near Spalding. During an immigration enforcement visit in 2022, officials discovered two unauthorized workers—a man in his 20s and another in his 30s. As a result, the company was fined £20,000.
Dame Angela Eagle, the Minister of Border Security and Asylum, emphasized the importance of adhering to immigration laws, stating, “Anyone who believes they can make money from working illegally in the UK should reconsider. I’m pleased to see justice served in this case.”
Hamza’s disqualification prohibits him from promoting, forming, or managing any business in the UK without court approval. According to the Insolvency Service, the fine remained unpaid when the company entered liquidation in August 2022, leaving liabilities exceeding £44,000. Chief Investigator Kevin Read described Hamza’s actions as “a serious breach of legislation and the standards expected of company directors.”
Dame Angela further highlighted the broader implications of illegal immigration, stating, “We know that many individuals who enter the UK and work illegally often endure appalling conditions and are misled about their prospects. To tackle this issue, we are intensifying our enforcement efforts against smuggling networks and ensuring that those who exploit the immigration system face full consequences.”
