Kolawole Ajayi’s journey from Nigeria to the United Kingdom is one of resilience, reinvention, and entrepreneurial success. Originally moving to the UK for academic pursuits, Ajayi found his true calling in the kitchen, where he turned a traditional Nigerian delicacy, suya, into a thriving business that now attracts food lovers from diverse backgrounds.
A Culinary Journey Rooted in Ibadan
Ajayi’s love for cooking began in Ibadan, Nigeria, where he grew up as the only son in a family that rarely encouraged boys to be in the kitchen. However, his curiosity led him to shadow his mother, learning the art of cooking by watching her skillfully prepare meals.
“My first attempt at cooking was making brown beans for my family when I was nine. The praise I received from my mum gave me the confidence to keep learning,” Ajayi recalls.
His culinary skills were further sharpened during secondary school and university, where resourcefulness was key. Whether it was preparing meals in the bush at boarding school or learning professional cooking techniques from a chef at his uncle’s eatery, Ajayi’s passion for food continued to grow.
Academic Pursuits Turned Entrepreneurial Path
Ajayi earned a degree in Agricultural Economics from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology in Nigeria before moving to the UK. There, he pursued further education, obtaining a Bachelor of Education from Middlesex University and a BBA from the University of East London.
While academics initially drove his relocation, a side hustle making suya—a spicy Nigerian grilled meat dish—opened doors to a new career.
Building a Suya Empire in the UK
What started as a modest venture soon gained traction as word spread about the authentic flavors Ajayi offered. His suya became popular among the African diaspora and other food enthusiasts in the UK, leading him to open successful restaurants in London.
Ajayi’s hard work and impact on the Nigerian community didn’t go unnoticed. Recently, he received a visit from Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), who commended him for being a true ambassador of Nigeria.
A Source of Inspiration
Ajayi’s story serves as an inspiration to Nigerians at home and abroad. His journey highlights the importance of staying connected to one’s roots while embracing new opportunities.
