About the Role

As a Senior Support Worker, you will support qualified mental health practitioners in delivering urgent and crisis mental health services across a range of specialist teams, including:

• Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Teams
• Mental Health Crisis Assessment Service (MHCAS)
• Liaison Psychiatry Services
• Street Triage Services
• Liaison and Diversion Services
• Crisis Line and Crisis Triage Services

You will work as the second responder and designated driver for Community Response Vehicles, assisting Band 6 Practitioners during face-to-face community mental health assessments and supporting individuals experiencing mental health crises.

Key Responsibilities

Your duties will include:

• Supporting qualified practitioners in delivering urgent mental health care.
• Assisting with community assessments alongside Band 6 clinicians.
• Contributing to risk assessments, safety planning, and patient observations.
• Providing practical and emotional support to service users, families, and carers.
• Signposting individuals to appropriate health, social care, and community services.
• Building effective partnerships with voluntary organisations and external agencies.
• Maintaining accurate records while ensuring confidentiality and safeguarding standards are upheld.
• Promoting recovery-focused and person-centred care.

Essential Qualifications

Applicants should have:

• NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care, a Level 3 Health and Social Care Apprenticeship, or an equivalent qualification.
• Evidence of training in supporting individuals with mental health needs.
• Training in psychosocial interventions or willingness to complete relevant training.

Desirable Qualifications

• Honours Degree in Psychology.
• Advanced IT and keyboard skills.
• Additional relevant academic or professional qualifications.

Essential Knowledge and Skills

Successful applicants should demonstrate:

• Knowledge of confidentiality and mental health legislation.
• Understanding of person-centred care, risk management, and care planning.
• Awareness of anti-discriminatory practice and equality principles.
• Knowledge of the Care Programme Approach (CPA).
• Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain sensitive information with empathy.
• Ability to assess individuals over the telephone.
• Analytical and decision-making skills within complex situations.
• Knowledge of psychological approaches to care.
• Familiarity with mental health policy and legislation.

Desirable Skills

• Experience using Microsoft Excel, Access, or other database systems.
• Academic publications or professional research experience.

Experience Required

Essential

• Experience working within a mental health setting.
• Experience supporting adults with severe or complex mental health conditions.
• Experience working collaboratively with service users, carers, and partner organisations.

Desirable

• Experience working in crisis or urgent care environments.
• Experience providing support through crisis or helpline services.

Training and Development

All new employees will complete the Trust’s Prepare to Care (P2C) induction programme, which includes up to three weeks of structured training designed to prepare staff for their role and support ongoing professional development.

Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)

Applications are welcomed from candidates who require or already hold Skilled Worker visa sponsorship.

Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) applications will be assessed in accordance with current UK Home Office immigration requirements.

International applicants may also need to provide overseas criminal record certificates where required under UK immigration rules.

DBS Check

This role is subject to an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1975.

The DBS application fee will initially be paid by the successful applicant and deducted from salary after appointment. Applicants are encouraged to register with the DBS Update Service.
