Understanding the Role of the Authorising Officer (AO)
When applying for a Sponsor Licence, the Home Office requires you to appoint key personnel within your business:
1. Authorising Officer (AO)
– The most senior person responsible for compliance and managing sponsored workers
– Must be UK-based and a paid staff member or office-holder
2. Key Contact
– The main point of communication with the Home Office
– Must also be UK-based and involved in the business
3. Level 1 User
– Responsible for day-to-day management of your Sponsor Licence
– From 31 December 2024, this person must hold Settled Status (Indefinite Leave to Remain or British Citizenship) and be an employee/director/partner of the business
Note: One individual can take on all three roles if eligible.
Why Getting It Right Matters
Appointing the correct people and following compliance requirements is essential to securing your Sponsor Licence and building a sustainable food business in the UK.
