As we approach the new financial year, there’s good news for workers across the UK, including Nigerians living and working here. Starting from 1 April 2025, both the National Living Wage (NLW) and the National Minimum Wage (NMW) will see increases that could mean more money in your pocket.
New Wage Rates:
- £12.21 per hour for those aged 21 and over.
- £10.00 per hour for 18-20 year olds.
- £7.55 per hour for apprentices and 16-17 year olds.
These increases come as part of the UK Government’s efforts to ensure that workers are paid fairly for their hard work, and are especially beneficial for Nigerians in the UK who may be employed across various sectors, including healthcare, retail, and construction.
Why This Matters:
If you’re working in the UK, it’s important to check your payslip come April. Ensure that you’re being paid according to the new wage rates. If you’re not being paid correctly, you have the right to raise the issue with your employer, and there are steps you can take to ensure you receive the proper wage.
What to Do:
- Check Your Payslip: Make sure that your hourly rate aligns with the new minimum wage for your age group.
- Know Your Rights: If your pay doesn’t reflect the new rates, speak to your employer or HR department. The law requires employers to pay at least the minimum wage.
- Take Action: If your employer refuses to pay the correct wage, you can report them to HMRC.
These wage increases may seem small, but they add up, especially for those working full-time. For many Nigerians in the UK, this increase could be a significant boost to your monthly income, so make sure you’re getting what you deserve.
At Naija UK Connect, we believe in empowering the Nigerian community with the information and resources to succeed in the UK. Stay informed, and make sure your pay reflects the new, fair rates starting this April.
