Passports are more than just travel documents; they symbolize freedom, access, and global mobility. However, the power of the UK passport has taken a hit, dropping from 28th to 38th place in the VisaGuide Passport Index over the past year.
The VisaGuide Passport Index assesses 199 countries quarterly based on factors such as visa-free travel, eVisas, global mobility, and where passport holders can travel without restrictions. The ranking also considers a Destination Significance Score that reflects a country’s GDP, Power Index, Tourism Index, and Human Development Index.
The UK Passport’s Current Standing
While the UK passport’s score of 87.07 out of 100 is respectable, it has been surpassed by other nations. Currently, UK passport holders enjoy:
- Visa-free access to 154 countries
- eVisa requirements for 21 countries
- Standard visa requirements for 19 countries
Although these numbers remain stable compared to the start of the year, other nations have made improvements, pushing the UK further down the rankings.
Visa-Free Countries for UK Residence eVisa Holders
For Nigerians with UK residence (whether through a work visa, student visa, or permanent residency), holding a UK eVisa or residence permit can also open the doors to several countries with relaxed visa requirements. Some of the countries that offer visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to UK residents (depending on the country’s agreement with the UK) include:
- Europe: Many Schengen Area countries such as Germany, France, Spain, and Italy allow UK residence permit holders to travel visa-free or with an eVisa for short stays.
- Asia: Countries like Hong Kong and Singapore permit easy entry for UK residence holders.
- Africa: Certain African nations, including South Africa and Kenya, may allow UK residents to travel without a visa or offer an eVisa option.
- Caribbean & South America: Popular destinations like Barbados, Dominican Republic, and Colombia often provide visa-free or eVisa options for UK residents.
This flexibility can make travel easier for Nigerian nationals living in the UK, as the UK residence permit may be recognized as proof of stable immigration status, often facilitating entry without additional visa requirements.
Other Rankings Offer a Different Perspective
The VisaGuide Index isn’t the only authority on passport power. The Henley Passport Index, another widely trusted ranking, places the UK passport in fourth place. The disparity arises because Henley’s methodology groups 13 countries tied in second and third place, which affects the UK’s position comparatively.
Who Holds the Top Spot?
The most powerful passport in the world, according to VisaGuide, belongs to Singapore, offering its holders unparalleled access to global destinations.
What’s Next for UK Passport Holders?
The strength of passports fluctuates based on geopolitical shifts and international agreements. UK passport holders can rest assured that their global mobility remains strong, but the competition is stiff. For Nigerians in the UK, holding a UK residence permit further enhances travel opportunities. Stay tuned for updates in three months when the next rankings are released.
