Starting January 1, 2025, the UK immigration system will fully transition to a digital format. Biometric Residence Permits (BRP) and Cards (BRC) are being replaced by the eVisa, an online record of your immigration status. Here’s what you need to know to ensure smooth travel and compliance.
1. Using Your eVisa for Travel
Your eVisa is now the primary way to confirm your right to travel to the UK. Before traveling:
- Link Your Passport: Ensure your current passport or travel document is linked to your eVisa via your UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account.
- Check Family Accounts: If you manage accounts for family members, confirm their travel documents are also updated.
- Update Details: If your passport or travel document changes, update your UKVI account immediately to avoid travel delays.
Access your UKVI account here: Update Your UKVI Account.
2. Create a Share Code
Although carriers are expected to verify your eVisa automatically, having a share code can be useful.
- Share codes are valid for 90 days and can be created in advance.
- Store your share code securely (e.g., print or save it digitally) for easy access.
Generate your share code here: View and Prove Immigration Status.
3. Carry Your Expired BRP/BRC Cards
If your BRP or BRC card issued through the EU Settlement Scheme expires on or after December 31, 2024, but you still have permission to stay in the UK, you must carry it when traveling internationally.
- Carriers like airlines will accept these expired cards for travel to the UK until March 31, 2025.
- If you no longer have a BRP or BRC, your travel permissions will be verified through other means.
