Nigerians in the UK and Their Connection to Nigeria
The Nigerian community in the UK maintains strong social, cultural, professional and economic links with Nigeria.
For many Nigerians living abroad, staying connected with home goes beyond family relationships. Diaspora Nigerians also participate in business, education, professional networks, community organisations, charitable initiatives and cultural activities.
Some support businesses in Nigeria, while others share professional expertise, invest in projects, mentor young people or participate in community development initiatives.
These connections form part of the broader Nigerian diaspora experience and were relevant to the discussions surrounding Nigeria Beyond the Ballot.
An Opportunity for Questions and Audience Participation
A key part of a community dialogue is the opportunity for people in the audience to contribute their own experiences and questions.
The Nigerian Factor event created a setting where attendees could listen to the speakers while also taking part in the wider conversation.
The event featured questions, contributions and discussions between speakers and members of the audience, creating an opportunity for Nigerians from different backgrounds to exchange views.
For Nigerians living in the UK, gatherings like this can provide opportunities to meet other members of the diaspora, exchange ideas and discuss issues affecting both their communities in the UK and their relationship with Nigeria.

How Can Nigerians Contribute Beyond Voting?
The central theme of Nigeria Beyond the Ballot raises a broader question: how can Nigerians contribute to national development outside election periods?
There are different possible forms of participation.
For Nigerians in the diaspora, these can include:
- Supporting Nigerian businesses and entrepreneurs
- Sharing professional knowledge and expertise
- Mentoring young Nigerians
- Investing in responsible business opportunities
- Supporting education and community projects
- Building professional networks between Nigeria and the UK
- Participating in civic and community initiatives
- Supporting charitable and development-focused organisations
- Engaging in constructive public discussions about Nigeria
These forms of participation are not limited to people with political backgrounds. Professionals, entrepreneurs, students, community leaders and individuals can all contribute in different ways.
The Importance of Diaspora Conversations
As more Nigerians build lives and careers outside the country, conversations about the role of the diaspora remain relevant.
The Nigerian diaspora includes people with different professional backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. Bringing these voices together can create opportunities to discuss shared concerns and possible areas of collaboration.
The University of Derby event provided one such platform, connecting Nigerians in the UK around a conversation about civic participation and national development.
The inclusion of creative expression, such as Bello Tobi’s artwork presentation, also showed that conversations about Nigeria can take different forms, bringing together politics, development, culture and art.
The Conversation Continues
The Nigerian Factor: Diaspora Edition – UK Edition brought Nigerians together in Derby for a conversation that looked beyond elections and towards the wider relationship between citizens, communities and national development.
The event took place on 26 September 2026 at the Cavendish Building, University of Derby, with speakers and attendees discussing the theme “Nigeria Beyond the Ballot.”
From panel discussions and audience contributions to the presentation of artwork by Bello Tobi to Prince Bayo Balogun, the event brought together different forms of Nigerian expression and engagement.
