Today is Time to Talk Day – a reminder that you don’t have to carry everything alone.
For many Nigerians in the UK, life can feel overwhelming. You may be juggling immigration worries, work pressure, family responsibilities back home, financial commitments, or loneliness in a new environment. All of this can quietly affect your mental health.
Talking about how you feel may seem hard – especially if you were raised to “be strong” or keep personal struggles private. But opening up to someone you trust can bring relief, clarity, and a sense of support.
You deserve to be heard. You deserve support. 💚
Simple Ways to Start Talking About How You Feel
You don’t need perfect words. Small steps can make a big difference:
👤 Think about who you feel safe with
This could be a close friend, family member, church leader, colleague, or mentor.
📝 Write down a few key thoughts
Jotting notes on your phone can help you organise what you want to say.
⏱️ Choose a calm moment
Pick a time when neither of you is rushed.
📞 Choose what feels easiest
Some people find it easier to talk on the phone, while walking, or during a casual activity rather than face-to-face.
You can start simply with:
“I’ve been feeling really stressed lately and I just need someone to talk to.”
When Should You Reach Out?
Good mental health does not mean feeling happy all the time. Everyone has ups and downs.
If feelings of stress, worry, sadness, or anxiety are starting to affect your sleep, work, relationships, or daily life, that’s a sign you may need support.
Reaching out early can prevent things from becoming overwhelming.
If You Don’t Feel Comfortable Talking to Someone You Know
You still have options:
- Speak to your GP (or register with one if you’re not yet registered)
- Contact Samaritans (free, confidential listening service)
- Use NHS 111 online for mental health support
Support is available in the UK – and you are entitled to access it.
Keep the Conversation Going
You don’t have to share everything in one conversation. You can talk again another day.
The more you talk about mental health, the easier it becomes.
Remember:
Needing support does not mean you are weak. It means you are human.
