UK Citizenship Applications Reach Record Levels
Applications for British citizenship have reached their highest level on record, with migration uncertainty and proposed changes to the UK’s immigration system encouraging more people to secure their long-term status.
Home Office figures show that 315,224 applications for British citizenship were made in the year to June 2026. This represents the highest number recorded in any 12-month period since records began in 2004.

The increase also reflects longer-term changes in migration patterns, including higher levels of non-EU migration and a gradual rise in the proportion of non-EU migrants choosing to become British citizens since 2021.

ILR Grants Also Reach High Levels
The rise in citizenship applications comes alongside a significant increase in the number of people being granted Indefinite Leave to Remain.
Home Office data shows that 199,628 ILR grants were recorded in the year to June 2026, an increase of 24% compared with the previous year.
This was the highest annual total since the year to June 2011.
The Home Office said the long-term increase in ILR grants reflects the growing number of people obtaining permanent settlement and subsequently becoming eligible to apply for British citizenship.
