Type 1 diabetes can develop quickly — sometimes within just a few days or weeks. Knowing the warning signs early could help save a life, especially for children and young adults, where this condition is most common.
In the UK, doctors describe the main symptoms as the 4 Ts 👇
⚠️ The 4 Ts of Type 1 Diabetes
🚽 Toilet – Going to the toilet more often, especially waking up at night to wee
💧 Thirsty – Feeling constantly thirsty and drinking much more than usual
😴 Tired – Always feeling tired, weak, or lacking energy
👕 Thinner – Losing weight without trying, or looking slimmer all of a sudden
🩺 Other Possible Symptoms
- Blurred vision 👀
- Breath that smells sweet or fruity (like pear drops or nail polish remover)
- Cuts or wounds taking longer to heal
- Frequent infections, such as thrush
If these symptoms sound familiar, don’t wait — Type 1 diabetes can become life-threatening if untreated.
🚨 When to Seek Help
If you think you or your child may have these symptoms:
📞 Book an urgent GP appointment or call NHS 111 for advice.
If symptoms are worsening — like stomach pain, vomiting, deep breathing, or confusion — call 999 or go straight to A&E. These could be signs of diabetic ketoacidosis, a serious emergency.
⚠️ Do not drive yourself to A&E — ask someone to take you or call an ambulance.
🧪 How It’s Diagnosed
Your GP will:
- Check your blood sugar levels (via finger prick or blood sample)
- Possibly test your urine for glucose
- Refer you to a hospital specialist for same-day testing and treatment if diabetes is suspected
If confirmed, you’ll meet a specialist diabetes care team to help you start treatment and learn how to manage the condition safely.
