Good news for Nigerians working or planning to work in the UK’s care sector 🇬🇧💚
The Scottish Government has announced that it will begin sponsoring visas for international care workers, helping hundreds of foreign workers – including Nigerians – remain in the UK legally and continue their vital work in care homes across Scotland.
Scotland’s First Minister, John Swinney, made the announcement during the Scottish National Party (SNP) conference in Aberdeen. He explained that the move comes as a direct response to recent UK government immigration restrictions, which have made it harder for care workers to secure or renew their visas.
“Care homes are crying out for staff, while thousands of care workers who are legally here in the UK have been left unable to work,” Swinney said. “It’s unfair that Scotland’s elderly population should pay the price for Westminster’s immigration prejudice.”
The Scottish government plans to invest around £500,000 to fund visa sponsorships for care workers — ensuring that care homes remain fully staffed and that those providing essential care, including many Nigerians, can stay in their jobs.
This comes as part of a broader push for Scottish independence, with Swinney arguing that Scotland’s interests – especially when it comes to workforce and migration – are often held back by decisions made in Westminster.
Why This Matters
For many Nigerians already in the UK care sector, or planning to relocate, this policy could open new opportunities. Scotland continues to face a shortage of care home workers, and this new sponsorship plan may help fill those roles while providing job stability for international staff.
The move is also seen as part of a wider commitment by Scotland to maintain a welcoming stance toward migrants, particularly those contributing to essential public services.
Key Takeaway for Nigerians
If you’re a Nigerian care worker already based in the UK — or you’re planning to relocate — Scotland may soon become one of the most supportive destinations for your career. With visa sponsorships funded directly by the government, the path to stable employment in healthcare just got a little easier. 🇳🇬🤝🏴
