Ever felt like you were smart in ways that school or work never really acknowledged? Maybe you’re great with people, musically gifted, or you can fix anything with your hands. According to Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences, you’re not imagining things—intelligence is much more than just book smarts.
Why this matters to Nigerians in the UK
For many of us in the diaspora, especially Nigerians trying to find our place in the UK, understanding the different types of intelligence can be empowering. It helps us make better career choices, raise confident children, and appreciate our own value in a society that often measures intelligence by exams and certificates alone.
What Is Intelligence, Really?
Traditionally, intelligence was tied to IQ scores—but that leaves out so much. From emotional understanding to physical dexterity, intelligence shows up in diverse ways. Socrates once said, “The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.”
In a culture where JAMB, WAEC, and GCSEs define who is “bright,” Gardner’s theory encourages us to look beyond that. It says: your ability to relate with others, lead a team, or interpret music also counts as intelligence.
The 9 Types of Intelligence
1. Visual-Spatial Intelligence
Great at visualising things and recognising patterns. You might be gifted in architecture, art, or design.
Careers: Architect, interior designer, photographer.
2. Linguistic Intelligence
Love writing, reading, or storytelling? You’re probably high in linguistic intelligence.
Careers: Author, journalist, professor.
3. Logical-Mathematical Intelligence
If solving problems and seeing patterns is your thing, this one’s for you.
Careers: Engineer, accountant, data analyst.
4. Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence
If you’re hands-on and good with physical activity or coordination.
Careers: Athlete, physiotherapist, dancer.
5. Musical Intelligence
You may find joy in rhythm, melody, or composing music.
Careers: Musician, sound engineer, songwriter.
6. Interpersonal Intelligence
You connect well with others, have empathy, and lead or mediate effectively.
Careers: Social worker, teacher, HR professional.
7. Intrapersonal Intelligence
You know yourself deeply, reflect often, and value personal insight.
Careers: Therapist, writer, spiritual coach.
8. Naturalistic Intelligence
You feel connected to nature and notice patterns in the environment.
Careers: Farmer, environmentalist, biologist.
9. Existential Intelligence
You think about life’s big questions and search for deeper meaning.
Careers: Philosopher, theologian, motivational speaker.
Why It’s Important for Us and Our Children
For Nigerian parents raising children in the UK, it’s key to remember that not every child will excel in math or science—and that’s OK. Some kids are born leaders, others are artistic or emotionally intelligent. Knowing this helps you support your child’s strengths instead of forcing them into a narrow path.
And for adults? Recognising your own intelligence type could open new doors—a different career path, a hobby, or even a business idea.
Embrace Your Type
Take pride in your unique combination of intelligences. Whether you’re “book smart,” “street smart,” or “people smart,” you have value. Naija UK Connect celebrates that diversity and encourages you to explore and embrace your strengths.
You’re not less intelligent because your gifts don’t show up in a classroom. You’re just differently intelligent—and that’s something to be proud of.
