Today, we mark World Asthma Day, a time to raise awareness and encourage better asthma care. As a proud Nigerian and NHS professional, I want to speak directly to our community here in the UK.
Asthma affects 1 in 12 adults and 1 in 11 children in the UK, including many in our African community. Sadly, Black and South Asian people are more likely to end up in A&E due to asthma attacks — often because of poor management or lack of understanding.
🎯 Let’s Get Real: What is Asthma?
Asthma is a long-term lung condition that causes wheezing, breathlessness, a tight chest, and coughing. Triggers vary — from pollen and dust to cold air and stress.
🩺 How Can You Manage Asthma Better?
Following NHS guidelines, here are some essentials:
✅ Use your preventer inhaler every day, even when you feel well.
✅ Carry your reliever inhaler (usually blue) everywhere — especially during cold weather or allergy seasons.
✅ Get an asthma action plan from your GP. This helps you know what to do when symptoms flare up.
✅ Book an annual asthma review — it’s your right and helps prevent complications.
✅ Avoid smoking and smoky environments — they make symptoms worse.
📌 For Parents in Our Community
Your child might not always say they’re struggling to breathe — look out for signs like:
🔸 Difficulty speaking in full sentences
🔸 Breathing faster than usual
🔸 Tiredness or being less active
💡 Speak to your GP or asthma nurse immediately if you notice these signs.
🙏 Let’s Break the Stigma
Too many in our community ignore symptoms or rely only on home remedies. Asthma is manageable — but untreated, it can be life-threatening. Seeking help isn’t a weakness; it’s wisdom.
💬 Final Thought
As we celebrate World Asthma Day, let’s not just raise awareness — let’s raise action. If you or your loved ones have asthma, take it seriously. Talk to your GP. Update your plan. Protect your breath — protect your life.
