About the Job
Are you looking to kick-start or continue your career in finance? Do you have an eye for detail and the ability to complete tasks to a high standard? This apprenticeship at HMRC offers a unique opportunity to experience finance work across different teams within HMRC.
You’ll gain valuable skills through placements in multiple finance departments, giving you a comprehensive understanding of how HMRC operates. You’ll also study for an AAT Level 3 & 4 apprenticeship while working.
This 3-year programme includes two 18-month placements, giving you a full spectrum of hands-on experience in the finance function. At the end of the first 18 months, if you meet the required milestones, you’ll have the opportunity to apply for advancement to Officer grade and potentially secure a permanent contract.

Responsibilities
As part of your role, you will be involved in:
- Analyzing the ledger to assess the financial position and helping produce financial reports
- Supporting the team with accounts and estimates by gathering information, performing reconciliations, and ensuring accurate data transfers
- Recording transactional data and maintaining evidence collection
- Assisting in maintaining data quality, including data cleansing, and improving process maps
- Collaborating with different business areas to ensure correct procedures are followed
Person Specification
You should:
- Have excellent communication skills and be able to convey ideas clearly and concisely
- Be highly organized with strong attention to detail
- Be adaptable and responsive to changing expectations
- Be proactive in finding creative solutions to problems
- Be comfortable interacting with others and working in a team
Essential Criteria
- External Applicants: Must have 5 GCSEs (grades 9-4 or A*-C), including Maths and English, or equivalent
- Existing Civil Servants: Must have GCSEs in Maths and English (Grades 4-9)
- Applicants must not be undertaking another apprenticeship or government-funded qualification at the same time
- Must be 18 or older by 1st September 2025
You will also need to pass an eligibility assessment from our training provider.
Additional Security Information
If appointed to 100 Parliament Street, you will be required to obtain Counter Terrorist Check (CTC) clearance. You must meet the minimum UK residency period (3 years) for CTC clearance before starting.

Selection Process
The selection process will include multiple stages:
- Application Form: Complete a basic application, including your CV and a personal statement (500 words max).
- Online Tests: Numerical, verbal, and judgment tests, which will be assessed against the required standards.
- Pre-recorded Interview: If successful, you’ll be invited to answer strength-based questions.
- Virtual Assessment Centre: A group exercise, written task, and live interview to assess behaviors and strengths.
Eligibility & Terms
Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria. This role is not eligible for ‘skilled worker’ sponsorship. The Civil Service values integrity and honesty, and any evidence of cheating will result in disqualification.
