The United States has released its updated list of eligible countries for the 2025 Visa Waiver Programme (VWP), and once again, Nigeria is not included.
The VWP allows citizens of certain countries to enter the US for tourism or business purposes for up to 90 days without needing a visa. However, while some African nations continue to push for inclusion, Nigeria, South Africa, and Ghana remain absent from the list.
What This Means for Nigerians in the UK
For Nigerians residing in the UK who may have dual citizenship or are considering travel to the US, this update could impact travel plans. While British citizens remain eligible under specific conditions, Nigerians holding only a Nigerian passport must still go through the usual visa application process.
What Has Changed in the 2025 VWP?
While most countries from the previous list remain, Romania has been added as a new entrant. The US government has also emphasized stronger security checks and prioritizing diplomatic relations in its selection criteria. However, Taiwan and the United Kingdom remain subject to certain restrictions within the programme.
How Does the US Visa Waiver Programme Work?
The VWP allows eligible travellers to bypass the standard visa process and instead apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) before departure. This streamlines entry into the US and is designed to encourage easier movement for business and tourism. However, since Nigeria is not on the list, Nigerian passport holders must continue to apply for a visa through the traditional process.
What Can Nigerians Expect?
While Nigeria’s absence from the VWP may be disappointing, it remains crucial for Nigerian travellers to adhere to US visa requirements and explore other visa options that may offer flexibility. Additionally, those with UK citizenship can still take advantage of the programme under the existing conditions.
