The UK Skilled Worker visa has long been associated with essential professions like healthcare, engineering, and IT. However, recent findings have revealed that some unexpected jobs—such as DJs, dog walkers, and homeopaths—are also on the list of eligible occupations.
Surprising Jobs on the Skilled Worker Visa List
According to Robert McNeil, a researcher at the University of Oxford’s Centre for Migration, Policy, and Society, some “middle-skilled” roles included in the visa system may not align with what many people typically consider essential for the UK’s workforce.
A deeper analysis of Home Office data shows that in the three years leading up to March 2024, the UK issued:
- 334 visas for animal care service roles, including dog walkers, groomers, kennel assistants, and stable workers.
- 167 visas for fitness and wellness instructors, covering yoga and Pilates teachers as well as lifestyle coaches.
- Visas were also granted for “costume interpreters”—individuals who dress in historical attire to greet visitors at museums and heritage sites.
Other unexpected professions on the skilled worker visa list include airport baggage checkers, bicycle instructors, cemetery administrators, and even homeopaths.
How Did These Jobs Make the List?
The inclusion of such roles stems from post-Brexit immigration policy changes. With the end of free movement for EU citizens, the UK government adjusted the visa system to allow middle-skilled workers to apply, whereas previously, non-EU citizens had to qualify for graduate-level jobs.
McNeil noted that while middle-skilled roles like plumbers, bricklayers, and engineering technicians are widely recognized, defining what truly qualifies as “middle-skilled” is tricky. This has led to some surprising additions to the list.
Government Response and Policy Changes
In response to rising immigration figures—peaking at 906,000 in 2023—the UK government has pledged to tighten visa regulations. A white paper set for release in the spring will focus on:
✅ Linking immigration policies to skill shortages.
✅ Encouraging the training of British workers to fill certain roles.
✅ Reducing dependence on foreign labor.
While these changes aim to reshape the immigration system, obtaining a UK work visa still requires employer sponsorship and a minimum salary—typically £38,700, though lower thresholds apply for younger workers or those in specific education programs.
Final Thoughts
For Nigerians in the UK or those considering the move, these findings highlight the evolving landscape of the Skilled Worker visa. Whether you’re in healthcare, tech, or even a less conventional profession, it’s worth checking if your skills align with the visa list.
