A family who opened a Nigerian restaurant in Northampton to address a gap in the market has expressed immense gratitude for the support they’ve received from both new and returning customers during their first six months in business.
GF 9JA Cuisine, located in Harborough Road, Kingsthorpe, is run by Favour Ayodeji and her parents, Anthony and Risikatu. The family, with over a decade of experience in the food industry, launched the restaurant in June last year after building a reputation catering for African weddings, birthday gatherings, and other social events.
Favour shared that the decision to open the restaurant stemmed from the increasing recognition of their brand across Northampton. She emphasized that the central location in Kingsthorpe played a key role in their choice of venue.
The restaurant serves traditional Nigerian foods and flavors, prepared with authentic ingredients not commonly found in local supermarkets. The menu features a variety of rice dishes, meats, and traditional “swallow” meals, alongside popular Nigerian snacks such as meat pies and sausage rolls.
Reflecting on their journey so far, Favour said: “It’s been a very pleasant experience. We’ve had people from different backgrounds try the food and give us positive feedback.”
The family attributes much of their initial success to word-of-mouth recommendations. They’ve also actively listened to their customers, incorporating new dishes based on popular demand. Despite the positive reception, Favour admits that navigating quieter periods remains a challenge.
GF 9JA Cuisine continues to focus on delivering a genuine taste of Nigeria, bringing a slice of home to Northampton’s diverse community.
