Ross Barkley, the English footballer, had the opportunity to represent Nigeria on the international stage through his father, Peter Effanga, who is of Nigerian descent. 🇳🇬
Barkley, born on 5 December 1993 in Liverpool, Merseyside, chose to play for England, the country where he was raised. Although he is of Nigerian descent through his paternal grandfather, he adopted his mother Diane’s maiden name after his father left the family when he was young.
He joined Everton as an 11-year-old and played for the club’s youth teams, eventually making his way to the senior team.

Although he never represented Nigeria in his career, Barkley’s heritage is a reminder of the global influence of Nigerian talent in the world of football.
